The Teaching literacy in ... in Year 7 materials provide subject–specific professional development for DET secondary teachers, demonstrating good practices in literacy teaching.

Teachers need to provide explicit instruction for students in meeting the literacy demands of their subject areas. This explicit literacy teaching is integral to the content teaching.

The sample units on this website integrate skills in written and spoken language while targeting subject outcomes.

The units provided include:

• for secondary teachers on how to teach literacy in ten Year 7 subjects
• a focus on the State Literacy and Numeracy Policy as it pertains to secondary subject teaching and learning
• professional development resources with images and annotations of the written materials that explain the what, how and why of the literacy aspects embedded in the teaching of the Year 7 subjects.

The units include teaching and learning programs, teacher notes and student handouts.
