Teaching Literacy in...
The Teaching
literacy in ... in Year 7 materials provide subject–specific
professional development for DET secondary teachers, demonstrating good
practices in literacy teaching. Teachers need to
provide explicit instruction for students in meeting the literacy demands
of their subject areas. This explicit literacy teaching is integral to
the content teaching.
The sample units
on this website integrate skills in written and spoken language while
targeting subject outcomes.
English: Writing persuasive text. Explicit and systematic teaching for engagement
of all students through modelled, guided and independent planning and writing.
Visual Arts: Lifting the mask. A unit of work developed
to familiarise students with art vocabulary, to analyse artworks using
the frames and to make artworks from appropriated images.
Science: Space. The unit provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge
and understandings about models, theories and laws relevant to the study of
space.
PDHPE: Rising to the challenge. Focuses on supporting students to develop
effective coping strategies to deal with positive and negative experiences
in life.
Dance: Ashley opposes Erica. Ashley opposes Erica is based on the story Hating
Alison Ashley by Robyn Klein and focuses
on the compositional process and making dance from a descriptive stimulus.
Music: Experimenting with sound. A series of eight introductory lessons for
Year 7 to ensure all students have a common understanding of fundamental music
concepts.
Drama: Life cycle. The unit outlines a series of eight lessons during which
students combine the elements of drama with the text of a poem to create a
group performance.
Design and technology (mandatory): Digital design media. Students are supported
in learning about web design, and in applying their learning to the development
of their own web pages.
