Student design task

Design a web page to represent yourself and to showcase your class work to the school community. The web page will be published on the school’s intranet.

Week 1
Introduction and overview of the Technology (mandatory) course and course requirements including design projects.
Determine prior knowledge about the design process using a Think–pair–share activity (4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.1.3).
Introduce the design task. Discuss the Information and Communications area of study and relate the design task to this area of study (4.1.3).
Introduction to using the school’s computer rooms (4.3.1).
Review simple computing techniques to establish students’ prior learning, e.g. logging on, launching applications, saving documents, retrieving files, use of the Internet (4.3.1).
Introduction to school Intranet (4.3.1).
Introduction to Front Page (4.3.1).
Week 2
Analyse existing websites. Web site review (4.1.1, 4.2.2, 4.3.1).
Identify key features of web site design. Scavenger Hunt (4.1.1, 4.1.2, 42.2, 4.3.1).
Students retrieve design task from shared folder and analyse the requirements. Design task(4.1.1, 4.3.1).
Week 3
Guest speaker: school intranet co-ordinator or network administrator to talk about how web pages are developed within the school intranet system and the benefits of their work to the school community. Guest speaker to also help establish technical, graphical and content parameters of the web site. Intranet coordinator interview (4.1.2, 4.1.3, 4.3.1, 4.4.1).
Use ICTs and establish time and action plans (4.2.1, 4.5.1).
Establish criteria to evaluate success. Developing success criteria (4.1.1, 4.6.1).
Week 4
Develop design concepts by sketching some initial ideas. Students record in folios how their ideas are evolving (4.1.1, 4.2.1).
Select appropriate content for pages. Consider relevant ethical issues, copyright requirements and publishing guidelines. Selecting content (4.1.2, 4.5.2).
Refine design concept (4.1.1).
Draw storyboards to show layout of web pages. Developing a storyboard (4.1.1, 4.2.1).
Students refine their ideas and evaluate them against criteria for success. Refer back to Developing success criteria (4.1.1, 4.6.1).
Weeks 5–7
Experiment with tools – scanner, software, digital camera. Consider how such tools may be applied to the final design. Record experiments and evaluations in folio (4.2.2, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.5.2).
Experiment with techniques – organising information, displaying information, scanning, background, layout, manipulating and editing images. Record experiments and evaluations in folio (4.2.2, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.5.2).
Make ongoing evaluations about the results from prototypes. Refer back to Developing success criteria (4.6.1).
Weeks 8–10
Make decisions about final web site design based on findings from experiments, design ideas and ongoing evaluations (4.2.2).
Record justifications for technical, text and graphical choices in folios (4.2.2).
Prepare final design sketches, including revised storyboard layout, colour choices and text (4.2.1).
Make ongoing evaluations about final design choices. Refer back to Developing success criteria (4.6.1).
Weeks 11–13
